Thirty minutes later, the taxi had virtually moved nowhere due to the dense traffic. In the back of the taxi, there was no sound, for neither Jason nor Ashley spoke but in the front; the driver was alive and fierce, swearing at people who tried to cut him off and the occasional few that ran through the traffic.
Jason checked his watch and realised that he was already twenty minutes late for his reservation and he could picture Sabrina sitting in the fancy restaurant alone, wearing a deep crimson dress that she had picked out for the occasion. He knew she would be furious and so he picked up the phone and called her.
The phone rang four times before Sabrina picked up the phone. Immediately, Jason apologized for being late and explained that he was stuck in traffic. Sabrina assured him that it was fine, stating that she had just gotten to the restaurant and that she did not mind waiting. Jason thanked her, blew her a couple kisses before dropping the phone.
“That your girlfriend?” Ashley asked as Jason was slipping his phone into his pocket. Ashley’s question caught Jason off guard and he hesitated before answering.
“Yeah. You remember Sabrina, right?”
“Wow. You and Sabrina are still going out?”
“Yep” Jason replied in a smug tone. “Five years since January 23rd.”
Ashley said nothing but smiled to herself and the back of the cab fell silent once more. Jason felt restless now after Ashley’s question and for a brief moment he remembered how she was once his best friends, inseparable since childhood and at some point he had fallen in love with her. However, all of that had changed at some point in and by high school; they were at each other’s throats. Jason couldn’t remember why they had fallen out and as the wedge that had divided him eluded him, Jason turned to Ashley for the answer.
“You don’t remember? Typical!” Jason knew that he should stop but with them stuck in traffic and with nothing better to do, Jason pestered Ashley until she answered.
“May 17th 2002. Your birthday. I gave you a bracelet. I know it wasn’t a fancy expense one but I spent all my money to get it for you and what do you do with? The very next day, you give it to Susie Carmichael, my worst enemy.” She then explained that on the day after his birthday, she had come to school early and seen him give the bracelet to Susie.
“Is that why you didn’t want to see me and started acting cold to me?” Jason asked stupidly.
“What do you think?” Ashley answered angrily. She turned her entire body away from him and Jason sighed before laughing.
“What are you laughing ‘bout?” Ashley asked, turning her head to give him a look that immediately silenced Jason. Jason knew that if he didn’t explain quickly, she would kill him so he turned his entire body to her. He unbuttoned his sleeve, ignoring Ashley’s questions and showed Ashley the bracelet on his wrist.
“Are you referring to this bracelet?” Jason watched Ashley’s expression change from angry, rock hard expression to one of complete shock.
“You still have it?” Ashley asked, after stammering a bit. It was then Jason explained that he had been wearing the bracelet ever since she had given it to him and that when he had given it to Susie, she had asked to see it and that he had just given to her to look at.
“Well that’s what happened.” Jason said. “Whether or not you believe me is up to you.” With that, Jason turned and looked out the window. Approximately five minutes later, Ashley broke the silence.
“Jason, I ain’t saying what you said is true, but hypothetically speaking, why didn’t you tell me that’s what happened?”
“Well hypothetically speaking, you never told me why you were angry at me. So there was no way of telling you this.”
“Well hypothetically, I forgive you for everything you did and I’m sorry for everything I did.” Jason took Ashley’s hands in his.
“Ashley, there’s no need for you to apologize.”
“Ok then.” Ashley said. She moved closer and crossed her legs. “So tell me what I’ve missed since middle school.”
